Is their a difference between sex and masturbation?

Ok, I know it's a stupid question. I'm fourteen years old, and a virgin. This boy that I have a thing with (or had) tells me he masturbates all the time. He says he thought of me, while doing it. I know sex is better, but is it the same feeling?
