I know alot of people say that it's better to start of on bikes like either the ninja 250r or ninja 500r, but there's not really that big of a difference in power between the ninja 500r and ninja 650r. The Versys uses the same engine as the 650r so would it be a decent starter bike.
I'm assuming that when experienced riders say not to start out on a 600, they're talking about something like a ZX-6r, which has an inline-four and a top speed of 150mph.
The engine in the 650r and Versys (as well as the ER-6n) is a parallel twin, giving them a top speed of only 120mph.
