Is the Supreme court passive or can it pull cases directly from the lower courts?

When I say passive I mean the case has to make its way up through the lower courts until it reaches a point where the supreme court can select from it. Or does the Supreme court have the ability to take any case it wants from the lowest of courts and hear it.
