director fanboy/girl-ism? I just don't get it.
I find movies like 28 Days Later, REC/REC2, and the Saw series to be thrilling, fun, and enjoyable. BUT I also enjoy movies like The Devil's Backbone, The Orphanage, and The Others. So I am not a person who only likes horror with gore and hates all others. Normally in a horror movie it's fine to hate the characters because you would have the pleasure of watching them all meet a gruesome end but that didn't happen.
I just cannot stand The Shining though. As in when people recommend it to me I get very angry because I have seen it and I don't see what's so great about it. I also hate when people say "maybe you didn't get it" as if there is some deep secret plot. It's not a confusing or twisty movie.
I find the child and mother annoying. I didn't care if they lived or died. I thought the husband was funny when he snapped and I didn't at all ever find it scary, flinch, or jump.
The part where the father went crazy made me laugh in a similar manner to when I laughed at Zombieland and Shaun of the dead only those were horror/comedies and I don't believe that to be the intention of The Shining.
The long empty hallways didn't scare me. The silence and solitude didn't scare me as I enjoy silence and solitude..just not in movies because it makes it boring for me. The hotel didn't scare me. The lady in the bathtub made me laugh. The blood coming from the walls did not scare me. The twins did not scare me-I have never found ghost children to be scary unless they were actually doing something.
But a horror movie doesn't have to scare me for me to enjoy it. Most don't scare me. However I still enjoy watching them. I didn't enjoy The Shining though. Not a single bit. I hated all the characters except for the father. Normally in horror movies it's fine to hate the characters because you would get to watch them meet a tragic or gruesome end. Not so in this movie.
My biggest complaint is that I found it boring. I just found it so damn boring. No I don't need gore or jump scares. Really, I don't. A good story can hook me. I just didn't care in this case. I wasn't pulled in and I just did not care.
