Is the rust protector/undercoat/paint warranty necessary or a gimmic?

I'm about to purchase a new car, and was wondering whether the salespitch for the rust inhibitor/paint sealant/fabric protector really necessary?

I've been told that most cars today already have some sort of rust inhibitor as per factor standard, and so whatever they try to get you to buy is extra. Is that correct?
