I highly doubt that this was a real life event, the movie producers most likely put that there for effect.

it is based off ed gein a serial killer who skinned some of his victims flesh but most of the story is made up and most of ed gein's victims were already dead. other movies that are based off of him are psycho and the silence of the lambs all quite different from the actual story
