I am looking for a car with pretty good gas mileage. Is the Mazda 3 a good choice?

I drove one of my friend's and I like everything except my knees were touching the bottom of the steering column and the console was so wide I couldnt do anything to fit comfortably. With boots I could not even fit them in to get on the pedal, and I am not a big guy, Im 6ft and only a size 11 boot.
They also get miserable traction in snow, far far worse than the average car because they are so light. They are very sporty in dry weather though.
If I was a little smaller I would be happy, but I would go for a honda otherwise. They are excellent and made in the US.

The Mazda 3 is the best car for the money. Consumer reports has the mazda 3 at number 2 of the top 5 least expensive cars they recommend to buy.
