To me, the mainstream media is obviously biased to the left. However, when I spoke with my niece in college, she thinks the media is biased toward the right. I was amazed, does any one else think that and why? I am talking about TV shows and articles that claim to be objective reporting like newspaper articles and news broadcasts. I am not talikng about news comentaty shows like Rush limbaugh or Bill O'reilly.

Depends on what your definition of "is" is. I mean "mainstream".

If you were referring the main NETWORK sources, I think they slant left.

If you include the cable news networks, I feel some lean left, some right.

Just my thoughts, but I believe that the cable news outlets do a better job *trying* to look at both sides.

Depends on the outlet. And unfortunately Rush and Bill are part of mainstream media, whether it serves to prove your (completely wrong) point or not.

They're biased to the advertisers. You'll never hear them badmouthing any company that buys ads from them.

"A popular Government without popular information, or the means of acquiring, it is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy, or perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives." ~ James Madison, Aug. 4, 1822

The media is not red or blue but green, the color of money. Most Americans get their news from the nightly TV reports and these broadcasts are required to make money for their parent corporation.

The original idea of the self-government is that the people are informed about their government and the current events. For example, if prior to the invasion and occupation of Iraq, the people of USA knew that Iraq had been inspected and had no WMD then perhaps, the USA would have avoided the tragedy of Iraq! It is the solemn collective responsibility of the media to inform the people of the USA so that decisions are based on facts.

How many Americans can find Iraq on a map? CNN News item:
"WHERE IN THE WORLD
Among 18- to 24-year-old Americans given maps:
87 percent cannot find Iraq
83 percent cannot find Afghanistan
76 percent cannot find Saudi Arabia
70 percent cannot find New Jersey
49 percent cannot find New York
11 percent cannot find the United States"
