Is the Italian-American community either well represented in US media or left aside?

I mean, im from the uk and dont know much bout the us. I can tell that there is a strong black community and they are very proud: they tend to stay and have friends within the community itself and they got their own songs and artists that are perceived as "representatives" of the black community and stick up for their "brothers". On the other hand i dont see the same for italian-americans. there are lots of starts lika madonna, lady gaga, a very large amount of important actors and actresses seem to have italian origin but they dont seem to be part of the same community as the black do..explain please..thanks
