Is the iPhone GPS suitable for use when hiking in wilderness and/or national parks?

I've been considering getting a handheld GPS unit, just for peace of mind when hiking in national parks or other remote places that wouldn't get cell phone reception.... Does the iPhone GPS work in remote places like this, or only in more populated areas? Can you download trail maps that can coordinate with the GPS? Or, is there some sort of application that can be downloaded to have GPS for remote hiking?

My other option would be shelling out a couple hundred more bucks for a Garmin unit to which I can download trail maps, but I'd like to get an iPhone anyway... this is one sticking point about the iPhone I wasn't sure about.

Oh, and by the way, as one other idea/question, does Google Maps or Google Earth accomplish something like this, to help keep track of where you are when out in the boonies?

Thanks for any insights.
