I have never had an apple computer, ipod or iphone. This will be my first experience with an iphone. My daughter just got one and loves it. I have to say it is pretty sweet from what I have seen. Ive used it briefly and I really like it.

The problem I have is I have had Windows mobile phones and blackberrys up until now and have enjoyed being able to put the content I have on my pc on the phone (ringtones, music, videos, etc....)

Can this be done with the iphone or can I only use itunes and have to pay for everything I already have?

Yes, you can sync up MP3 audio files and MP4 video files up your iPhone, even if the songs and videos comes from other sources or pre-exist with you.

More than a store, iTunes is also a sync manager that can do a lot of other things.

yup music should be pretty easy.
import MP3's into itunes
connect iphone to computer
sync (ie upload) whatever music is in itunes library to phone.

music and ringtones i have no idea. i have never tried that.

Well you can only use itunes to sync an iphone. But yes i think you can just download any song or video from another source and then add it to the itunes library and sync it to the iphone.

I personally have an iPhone 3gs and I can tell you yes you can sync music, video, photos, ringtones(create ringtones from songs in iTunes or download from a third party), apps, podcasts, etc.
