Is the Ford Explorer a good Choice?

I'm about to turn 16 and i'm looking into getting my first car. I was on Craigslist and the best car i saw within my price range was the explorer. I've heard a lot of good things, but i've also heard a lot of bad things. I'm looking at 1997- 2000 models and i've heard that things break. A lot. And i really don't have the money to get transmittion fixed (my mom has MS and my dads boss is very cheap) so if it breaks i'm out of a car. So is the explorer worth looking into?
I'm able to drive the car. I actually have experience. i want to know if it is likely to break on me i know i'm and i'm a beginner i want to know if its likely that the transmittion will break on me.

Always think PRACTICAL You will always find yourself needing sometihng hauled and you just cant haul anything in a compact car. so really any large vehicle even though they suck more gas is always better for you. and remember Ford didn't take bail out money. so I would deffinately say YES. I always owned regular cars. and have always found my self needing more capabilities such what pick up trucks had to offer.
