Yes he is right to refer to Marx, as he correctly identified the failures of capitalism.

I think Marx was right about the nature of religion as well - that it is "the sigh of an oppressed creature" and "the opium of the masses", i.e. that it gives people hope and makes them less likely to fight for better conditions now - for me, religion does not have the answers, but socialism does.

Having said that, if you are religious - of whatever faith - you are still welcome to join in the class struggle!
 
It is disheartening to see church leaders be so naive. Archbishop Williams has, in effect, endorsed a philosophy which has brought misery and death to tens of millions of people, many of them Christians who were persecuted for their faith.

Given the Church's History in this country I think that it has forfeited the right to lecture anybody about anything at all.

As long as the state or the federal governments are not supporting
the church they have, and should have a right, to talk about anything
they so choose whenever they choose. Plain and simple. It is no
ones business weather they agree or disagree.
 
One does not need to reference Karl Marx to understand the evil of unbridled capitalism; its purpose is to consolidate wealth into as few hands as possible.
 
Unbridled capitalism doesn't work, we all know that. In order to work Capitalism needs to be controlled to a certain extent.

I think the Church also feels that consumerism and acquisition of money took over from strong family values and religion in this country and therefore feels a particular interest in this idea.
 
As an atheist and one who strongly sees all organized religion as a poison in this world, I can honestly say that Dr. Williams has a damn fine point!
