Is the "check engine" light an easy ripoff for some car repair places? I think so.?

Last year's inspection ....guy had to change oxygen sensor which had caused the "check engine" light to come on. That mechanic I believe. But this year.....I took it to another mechanic, and he called me on the phone and said it was on again. I could just swear it was not on when I dropped car off. There's a small possibility that it was on. So , just like last year, I have to cough up about $250 for a little oxygen sensor. I think next year I'm going to try and disconnect the darn warning light. (PS....The car can't pass inspection with the "check engine" light on).
What are your stories?

The check engine light is tricky business.

First, you can't pass inspection disconnecting that light. Keep that in mind.

The check engine light is an indication the computer in your car has detected something not working right. It can be anything from something minor and stupid to something epic. The check engine light works as a VERY broad indicator. It takes a scan tool (which most shops will charge you around 80 bucks to do) to communicate with the computer and find the codes for the problems the computer is detecting.

The check engine light isn't a ripoff tool....but can create so many headaches for both mechanics AND vehicle owners it's not even funny.
