Is the British wildlife doomed?

I know this sounds pessimistic - and conservationists seem to be optimistic people - perhaps too optimistic.
But successive governments have shown no regard to the wildlife of this country. The only reason we are worried about climate change and pollution is because HUMANS may be affected.
We regard this country as a place to build houses and grow crops - nothing else.

The population will soon rise to 70 million, and the EU will force us to take even more immigrants - probably for ever. In most of my lifetime the population remained stable, but even so the decline in
animals which used to be common has been horrific.
It seems the odds are getting stacked up against wildlife.
Can anyone say something optimistic?
