Is the Babylonian exile a turning point in Western Civilization?

When Israel was conquered by Babylon, and the Jews carried off into exile, it became paramount to take the oral traditions and the various bits and pieces that had been written down and compile them into one single treatise, in order that the Jews wouldn't forget their heritage. Thus the Old Testament was born. If there had been no exile, no torah, would Judaism just have been a minor cult in the Mediterranean world, which would have faded away while Roman ascendancy controlled Europe?
