Is the art of the Debate dying?

I enjoy public speaking, I believe certain ideas, thoughts, and opinions need to be heard and backed up to make this society a better place. I recently found on the college I was planning to attend moved my core classes to a different major. I do not understand why, but this is what has happened. So, I ask you. Is there no longer a need for public Speakers such as Martin Luther King,and Kennedy? Are people speaking out for what is right no longer relevant to today's society? Is there no longer careers out there like this?
 
Not really, but it's changing radically.
Don't expect todays public to listen to anything but 'sound bites'.
They have been conditioned by the media to have too short an
attention span to follow a reasoned argument and kept
too ignorant of the issues to understand one.
 
We need more debaters !!! Obma is one of the great ones.. Sadly the art of debate is fading away..
