Is the 2.4L Dodge Engine from a 2004 SRT-4 an "interfering engine" or...

..."non-interfering engine"? I took the car in to the local repair shop. They told me the timing belt gave out and that it would be okay if the engine was a non-interfering engine. I have had trouble trying to find this out on numerous forums and search engines. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Those would be non-interference engines to which I am 95% sure. Either way, get out your ratchet and turn the crank and listen. You can do this without removing anything - just get to the crankshaft and you'll be able to tell if there is any interference. If you are still unsure - you can always call Dodge and speak to one of the mechanics and they can tell you. As to the post above, I believe that if there is ANY interference at all whatsoever, it would be considered an interference. What I mean is it either is or it isn't - not both. Hope that helps!

Yes and no. The 2.4 Liter (148 cu. in.) in-line four cylinder engine is a double over head camshaft with hydraulic lash adjusters and four valve per cylinder design. The engine is free-wheeling; meaning it has provisions for piston-to-valve clearance. However valve-to-valve interference can occur, if camshafts are rotated independently.
