Is technological civilization inevitably associated with a proliferation of...

...stupid, do-gooder laws? For the last 100 years, as technological society has matured, we have seen a massive increase in legalistic, draconian laws aimed at limiting individual behavior - usually in the name of "public safety" or "security" ad nauseum. For example, since 1971 there's been the ever-increasing enforcement of the Nixon-Reagan-Bush 1 and 2 "war on drugs" despite its obvious wretched failure. Countless harmless Americans are rotting in prison due to this ongoing national pooch-screw. Or how about all the destruction of rights, privacy ect. we've had since 9/11? In all his wildest dreams, I'll bet Bin Laden couldn't have imagined what a effective blow he was striking against us that day! For he just thought he was physically killing and terrorizing people; little did he know he'd cause America to turn traitor against our own Constitution!!!
A case in point; I've had insomnia the past few nights due to a change of jobs (and work schedules.) I seldom drink anymore, but tonight I'd had enough of tossing and turning, and went to Wal-Mart for some beer. I was pissed off about the insomnia, so I forgot my wallet at the motel I'm staying in.
Now mind you - I'm 40 years old.
The lady at Wal-Mart CARDED ME (grey hairs at the temples and all!) I didn't have my ID along, so she wouldn't sell me the beer (saying our state was "beyond strict" at enforcing underage drinking laws.)
I just about sh!t a brick. Luckily, Town Pump down the street sold me some beer (10 minutes before 2 a.m., when he'd have had to say no too!)
Idiotic, no-common-sense, legalism. And its getting worse every year. Is technological society worth losing all our freedoms over? Is technology, inevitably linked to growing government intrusiveness?
Could it be, that a global thermonuclear war that sent us back to the Stone Age (or at least back to an agrarian society) would be a GOOD thing, in the long run?
