Is spending a lot of time in a chat room just a coping mechanism for a.......?

pathetic life? I mean if you are 17 and all your "friends" come from a chat room because you have none in real life then isn't the whole thing just a way to cope? What if all your "gf's" come from online as well and you normally spend about 14 hrs a day in a chat room talking to ppl you have never met in real life? Thanks
