Is smoking permitted inside restaurants?

Hi! :)
I'll be travelling to London in a few weeks with someone who smokes quite a lot. Last time I was in town (a couple years ago), there were smoking areas inside pretty much every restaurant, but I believe that since then the smoking ban has been reinforced. Do restaurants still have asides for smokers?

you have to ask someone from the restaurant
some have certain smoking areas, and some arent allowed at all
 
NO its illegal inside any public place.
Youll hav eto go outside. We dont like smokers here... :-)

no its banned in all indoor places

or somewhere that has 3 walls and roof basically

due to law passed a few years ago
 
As far as I am aware, all area's inside are none smoking area's now. It is a trip outside for your smoker friend.
