Is sales tax per item or is it calculated based on the grand total spent?

I live in AZ and the total sales tax comes to 9.3 where I live (including state,county,and city taxes). I was just wondering if say I was going to walmart and I bought 50 items...does each item get taxed separately or is the price totaled up and then its taxed?
