is rooting nexus one safe?

well i have been debating if i wanna do this or not. i mostly want to do it for wifi tethering and for trackball notifications. i might add a rom but i just want to root without adding a rom for now. what are the chances i can damage my phone or bricking my phone while trying to root it? any of u guys can help me root my Nexus One without adding a rom (even though i will really be interested in adding a rom too)? im running on a macbook pro using the latest version of Mac OSX and im using the AT&T 3G enabled Nexus One running Android 2.1
