Is Rit Dye really all that bad?

So I'm in the process of making a costume, and i have dyed three fabrics to my desired color, all 100% cotton, except one that was 100% polyester that despite everyone saying the color wouldnt stay, it actually did, with RIT dye. I still have to dye another 100% cotton fabric and a unitard,90% cotton 10% lycra. I plan on just tinting the unitard and the other fabric. I'm alittle concerned; When I look online I have read nothing but negative reviews on RIT dye, in that it fades , washes out, and bleeds. I, of course, despite meerly tinting the fabric, want the color to stay. I have already dyed some fabrics with RIT and now am concerned that I can never wash them in fear of the colors washing out. So, Is RIT dye really as bad as they say? Or do I really need to switch to a fiber reactive procion dye? Which is what im fearful of since I've heard its considerably toxic. If i must go that route..... Anyone know if Joanns sells any?
