if TV is too important to your family you need to work on lifestyle changes-getting rid of the TV may force people into differnt behaviors but i don't think it is the right way. I think it is a symptom morre than the problem. People watch to much TV for lack of better activities and as a bad habit they have developed.
institute game night and plan more outside activities as a family to reduce TVtime.
Also consider family viewing of some of the quality programming-documentaries, history channel, animal planet, etc.
