In a sense it is.
Im not a fan of rap, but more of pop, techno and snazzy hip-hop fun beats.
If you listened to the hip-hop (not really rap) song, "Day and Night", it's pure literature. You could put those lyrics in any song genre and people would still feel it's deepness.

Rap is more conversational genre put to music. I would not call it poetry by any means. Poetry is complex as a literary art; rap lyrics set to music are all the same and lack complexity, variety, originality, etc.
I abhor rap.
