Is putting a bell on my cat's collar likely to make him more nervous?

My cat is almost a year old and he's always had a collar with a bell on it. I like it because when he runs out of sight outside i can find him because of the bell. But a friend told me that the bell constantly ringing in his ear with every move he makes might make him more nervous and affect him mentally. I cant find much info on this. So, what do you think?
