i am just wondering what novicaine has to do with general anesthesia? anything with the word "caine" at the end would be a numbing agent but not really actual anesthesia where you are put to sleep.
i was going to ask you if you had ever had a reaction to general before and thats what is making you so nervous but i see this is your very first surgery so i guess i answered that one for myself. the different types of anesthesia they use today are not as prone to some of the side effects like the ones even ten or fifteen years ago are. i personally have had to have six surgeries and an aneurysm coiling done in my brain and have never had an anesthsia reaction of any kind. and i am very hypersensitive to alot of different meds. just discuss your concerns with your doc and the surgeon and the anesthesiologist before your surgery. most anesthesiologists are very very nice and will calm any fears you may have, espescially if this is your first surgery. they DO understand what you are feeling and dealing with believe me. if you are taking ANY types of meds either Rx or OTC,they need to know that(herbal suppliments too).and if you have ever had any reactions to meds too. they just want your surgery to go as safely as you do,trust me on that one.
when you speak to your surgeon just ask him to talk you thru the pre op process and what to expect after, same with the anesthsiologist. the more fear of the unknown you can take out of the picture, believe me,it will make you feel at least some control over things. the thing is,you go in, they put you out and you just wake up and its all done. don't be afraid to speak up in the recovery room reguarding any pain you may be feeling. they are there to help with that. usually with morphine immediately post op. it does help alot.
you really have to look at how many surgeries these people do per day and nothing happens vs thinking about the what ifs, since the chances are pretty slim that anything will actually go wrong. i am sure you will do fine hon. if you have any other questions just hollar,K good luck, FB
