is my timing belt broken?or something else in my car?

I have a toyota 4runner yr.91. and this morning when it started it was making a rumbling noise, not so much a knocking or a clicking sound.but more of a rumble more intense than the semis make. then it just Shut off. and now it wont start. is my timing belt broken or something else? help :/
