Is my Nokia phone dead?

I forget the model number but it is about a year old. The battery on it was low and I put it on a table while I was working in the garden. When I picked it up, the phone was very hot and the screen was dead. I have plugged it in to recharge it, but nothing is coming up on the screen. It makes a single beeping noise when I plug in the charger or try to switch it on, but nothing is happening. Oh dear. Any ideas?
I have just phoned it and it rings, but nothing appears on the screen - need a new phone?
