Is my menstrual cycle being affected by weight loss?

I am 17 years old, and have been overweight (obese) through most of my life (I'm otherwise completely healthy). I haven't had a period for about a year, and my doctor attributed it to my lifestyle. Recently (in the last few months), I've completely changed my lifestyle choices - I exercise daily, eat very healthy, and I've had significant weight loss (about 35 pounds thus far).

For the past week I have had NASTY back pain and been nauseas, headachy, etc. Well beyond any symptoms I ever had of PMS. My doctor said I just had the flu, and it went away. Yesterday the back pain came back (though not as badly) and last night I started my period for the first time in about a year (the flow is also very heavy. When I first got it when I was 12 it was this heavy, but got lighter as I got older).

Could my period suddenly starting and bringing the general sick-feeling be due to my change in lifestyle? Cause this is pretty miserable and I'm hoping it regulates soon haha. I'll go to the doctor if necessary, but if this is something that'll work itself out as my body adjusts then I'm fine with waiting for that.
