Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.

During the summer of my tenth grade year, I participated in an international youth exchange held through my mother’s airline. It connects kids with parents in the flight industry around the world is paired with another kid with that same advantage. The girl that I was paired with, Mariama, lived in a little city named Hanover in Germany. I went about three days after my school let out since Mariama’s ended 2 weeks after mine. The day that I left America and went to Germany gave me a feeling of confidence and independence; something that I had never felt before since my parents were there by my side for most of my life. After arriving in Germany I feared for the worst. So many “what if” questions were racing through my head but they were all eventually eased when a mother and her daughter approached me when they asked if I was Alanna Diggs. Later that day, Mariama asked if I wanted to go to a party hosted by a friend of hers. I said yes but it turns out that everyone there except for me got drunk. Also, many of her friends were afraid to speak English to me because they were afraid that I would judge them. So this would often lead to me sitting in a group with everyone blabbering in German. But I could tell when they were talking about me because all eyes would shift towards me while I was day-dreaming about being back in America with my friends speaking in perfect English. But when I was alone with Mariama we would often take biking trips to almost anywhere we went. I was not used to this since I mainly used buses to get to anywhere I needed to be. But the most amazing trips we took were to the countryside where trees that were unfamiliar to my sight grew so high you would have thought that they touched the sky. And the air was crisp and refreshing; something unheard of in the city. But eventually it came time for me to come home. I said my fair wells to my host family, for they were wonderful people. They told me to come back next summer and I said that I would try but I knew that many other new, exciting opportunities would come up, allowing for little to no time for vacationing. This made it all even sadder. On the plane ride home next to a napping person with halitosis, I reflected on the many adventures and sights that I had seen. This whole experience made me see that there is more to life than how I am living right now. With biking on the countryside, emotions that I had never felt before came to life and they never died, leaving me with a yearning to recreate that experience. Now it made me realize another passion inside of me; to travel the world and see electrifying and thrilling places.
