Is my condition considered a pre-existing condition?

I am thinking of starting my own business (currently I have an employer). One thing that is giving pause is the whole pre-existing condition issue with health insurance.

I had a bypass surgery about 18 months ago ( I am under 40). I do not yet know whether it's a chronic condition or as a result of my past lifestyle ( i did eat in an unhealthy manner prior to the surgery). So far all indications are that I am doing pretty good.

If I were to strike out on my own, would I be able to obtain health insurance?

Yes bypass surgery would be considered a preexisting condition. Every insurance has a different time frame for calling something preexisting. Some insurances will even cover preexisting conditions but you will be required to pay a higher premium. I would do some research and find out what the options are before canceling your current insurance. I broke my leg 3 years ago and now have hardware in it so my new insurance won't pay anything if I start to have problems with my hardware.
