(car is a nissan almera/sentra with a qg18de 1.8 litre engine, 90000 miles, year 2001)
My car has been driving like crap for a while now. Recently its completely impossible to drive. The car has previously thrown codes such as p0171 (lean) and p0300,0301 (misfires).
When I unplug the MAFS, the car is fine up to the rev limit of 2500 rpm, when I plug the MAFS back in, the car drives terribly again.
I took the car to a nissan garage, who spent 5 minutes with the diagnostic machine plugged in, and said that it MIGHT be an oxygen sensor (£200 for the whole replacement job).
Would an oxygen sensor really cause these problems, which leave as soon as the MAFS is disconnected?! Also- i have the feeling that I saw 'REAR oxygen sensor' on his monitor when he was ordering the part- as far as I know the rear sensor doesn't control the mixture but monitors cat. efficiency?
I really dont want to waste my money on something that will do nothing. As I said, the car drives terribly (it won't go above 25mph, 10mph up a slight incline, but ONLY when the MAFS is plugged in.
Basically, I know it sounds MAFS related, but is there realistically any chance that a bad O2 sensor (front or back) could cause such a dramatic change in engine performance?
