Is my alternator bad (2001 Pontiac Bonneville)?

About a week ago I had to get my car jumped because I thought my battery was dead, but the next morning it was dead again, which made me suspect the alternator. My Dad suggested that I get the car started then disconnect the battery to see if the alternator kept the car going. The car did keep running, but the voltage meter's needle was going all crazy and the interior lights kept dimming.

Does anyone have an opinion on what this could be? Does it sound like the alternator? Any input would be appreciated! Thank you!
Edited to add:
1. I don't think that this year of Bonneville has a separate voltage regulator. I think they stopped in 1994 for this model.

2. I don't have anything to test the battery, but could take it to Autozone.

3. I have no idea what a serpentine belt is, I'm not very mechanically inclined :)
