Is Mathematica truly helpful for economics students?

I'm currently just starting a graduate program in economics. I've never used Mathematica before, but I do understand from its online product brochure that it can be applied to economic calculations.

Just wondering if anyone out there has used Mathematica for such economic calculations and whether or not it truly proved helpful?... (Or perhaps it was just a lot more work than really being all that helpful for a student?)

It is also my understanding that it takes quite a while to learn how to use Mathematica...? Is this true?

Thanks in advance!
