FMJ is the most authentic movie ever made about Marine Corps Boot Camp ! So much so that R. Lee Ermy (Gunny Hartman) was a former Marine Corps Drill instructor. Most of the dialogue that transpired during the boot camp scenes was recall from his own days as a DI.
I too was a Marine recruit about ten years prior to Vietnam. About the only difference I saw was, we were billeted in quonset huts rather than modern barracks.
The verbal abuse was real. The racist comments were real. Physical abuse was really real during my time in boot camp. Not so much in the movie. The ridicule towards an individual was commonplace, however in my boot camp every one got a turn.
