Is manga a graphic novel or a comic book?

For English homework we have been asked to adapt part of a book to one of these formats and I was hoping to do it in manga form but am not sure whether this counts as a comic book or graphic novel.

Also, if I do end up doing manga, should I do it backwards like they do in Japan (I live in England) - I do have some manga books I can look at for reference material to enable it to be read backwards.

It's not backwards!! Its Japanese Style lol.

Comic books and graphic novels can be used interchangebly, but graphic novels usually contain more serious and mature themes like Watchmen.

Manga in Japan is similar to books in the West, they have genres of every kind, from adult to fantasy to action to romance. So some resemble comic books aimed at kids, while other resemble graphic novels aimed at adults.

Try looking for the manga adaptation of Star Wars, they do it right to left and was like the movie, but when it came to the west they reversed it so everyone walked in the opposite direction.

manga is graphic novel material, the story lines can be and quite often are very violent.
also there are many manga dvd's that are available to buy

I think that a Comic Book is practically considered as a Graphic Novel.
Graphic Novels are novels with graphics right?
then as long as a Comic Book or Manga have a novel like story, then its considered as a Graphic Novel.
