is lack of non-sexual displays of affection the same as lack of intimacy?

my boyfriend and i have a wonderful fantastic sex-life, but he is not into hugging, cuddling and things like that unless it leads to sex. i am wondering if this is a lack of intimacy? we have geat conversations but he is not an open person, its hard and takes time for him to open up. i am starting to wonder if he is incapable of intimacy, or if this is normal for a guy to be like this even if he cares?
