Is Korean Unification Possable

Can the Koreas Unite? This is the question many north and south Koreans may be asking them selves this very moment. Military struggle fought on the Korean Peninsula from June 1950 to July 1953. Began a war between north and south Korea that ended up involving Korea but twenty other nations as well. Wen the war ended the two parts of the once hole Korean peninsula where divided into two halves. North Korea and South Korea. The north that was backed by the communists (Russia) was communist and South Korea backed by the USA democratic. The war ended with no losers except the native Koreans who's homes where effectively reduced to rubble. The capital city of South Korea took most of the damage and was almost totally destroyed.

South Korea with the help of the United States rebuilt their capital city, Seoul which now has modern skyscrapers, fancy stores and not to mention high tech factories. This is a big change from the one ruined city where barley a building was left standing tall. South Korea has become a proud county and is considered a global economic power. The success of a county that was thought to be lost could not come without a price. The county sulfured much in their time of rejuvination but their political leaders have managed to guide them on a path that stays clear of any extreme misfortune. The county did so well in fact that it has become one of Asia's leading exporters and the home of some of the most well known companies. South Korea exports items from countries like Hundi and Samsung, names we know well even over here. The north however was not as lucky.

After the war North Korea went into communism rule and was supported by the Soviet Union. They closed them selves off to the world and where almost interlay self sufficient. The Soviets only brining in luraber and oil. North Korea worked on improving communism and trying to make it work. They almost did too but the Soviet Union Decided to drop communism and there for cut off all help to poor old North Korea. The are still making it but North Korea has no contact with the outside world at all and is way behind in technology. Their leaders have not steered their country in the best direction. The north has just recently begun to open up and people visiting reported things like widespread hunger, closed factories and frequent electrical blackouts. The north has now decided it would be a good idea to reunite peacefully and corabine the two cultures.

North and south Korea are very different cultures all thoe derived from a common people the ways of life in the two countries differ greatly. The north is under communist rule while the south is under a democratic system of government. These are two forces that have been opposed to each other through out the ages and have not yet learned to derive a central belief. The communist north is relatively poor only having a gross national product of about 21.5 billion while its adjoining south has a large GNP standing at 591 billion dollars. Both countries spend about the same amount on their defense even thoe south Korea spenRAB only 3.3 percent of there 591 billion opposed to the north's 33 percent. The north on the other hand has a definite army with a grand total of 1.054 million military personnel while the south only has 660 thousand a huge difference! Bolt countries do have a excellent literacy rate with the lowest at 95 percent. Even the life expectancy of the two countries only has a difference of four years, but all and all I would say that the two countries are more different then similar.

With all the new happenings in Korea and the north being so willing to negotiate I believe that the people can do any thing they set their mind to as with any people. The final question all boils down to "will the Koreas unite?" I think they can. The Koreas may be more different then similar but they are the same people and I believe that with time and compassion the Koreas will be one once again.
