I was just voting on upcoming secrets on Six Billion Secrets, and I came across one that someone had submitted:
Every time someone gets mad at how gay is used I get furious. Gay doesn't mean homosexual, it means happy or silly. Queer means weird. Fag means cigarette. Your just as ignorant as those you claim hate you. No one cares about your sexuality except you.
What are everyone's opinions on this? I myself am straight, but I still get upset when people use such terms. Even though they may not have meant gay in the past, they do now. Or maybe they technically don't? I'm not entirely sure... but the majority of people you ask would say that they consider them to mean homosexual.
I know for a fact that many people use the words 'queer' or 'fag as a derogatory term for a homosexual. What I also consider offensive is when people use the word 'gay' synonymous with 'stupid' or 'lame', or as an insult. It is not a negative term, and shouldn't be used in that context.
In fact, google defines fag as "an offensive term for an openly homosexual man." It also states that while queer was "originally a synonym for "odd" or "unusual," the word evolved into an anti-gay insult and is sometimes still used in a derogatory manner."
Just another thought... If you consider these words to be insulting/degrading, does that really mean that you consider homosexuality tself to be a bad thing? Because I fully support homosexuality, I just don't agree with using queer or fag to describe them. If the person themself doesn't have a problem with it, then I suppose it is alright. But used as an insult it is just horrible. And gay is NOT synonymous with stupid, and it shouldn't be used like that. Most people don't aren't trying to say that gay = stupid, but that is what it implies.
Any answers greatly appreciated.
This may be a bit off topic.. but what about calling someone a 'retard' or a 'spastic'? Becuase it really is implying that being retarded/spastic is something bad.
I know that that's not what people mean, but it's still offensive. Being retarded is not something to joke about - it's a serious issue.
