My boyfriend and I work at the same restaurant. A fellow worker told him today that a bartender who we are both friends was fired the day before. My boyfriend got off of work, came home and called our friend to ask him if he was okay and tell him he was sorry that he got fired. Apparently, it was just a rumor because the guy freaked out and said he had no idea what my boyfriend was talking about. He went to the up to the restaurant right after getting off of the phone with my boyfriend, and asked the managers what was going on. Anyway, they found out that my boyfriend was the one who called him, and they are writing him up for "gossiping". This seems completely 1984-ish to me. How can you possibly get written up at work for a conversation that you had off of the clock?! My boyfriend wasn't trying to perpetuate a rumor. He was trying to console our friend. I just think it's completely unfair and wrong for him to get in any kind of trouble for what happend. Am I right? Is there anything he can do about this?
