Since June 1999 I have been driving a 1999 Toyota Camry. The car was purchased brand new and I"m the original owner.

For the past 2 years this car has needed expensive repairs. On average I spend $1500 a year on repairs to keep my car running.

Last week I just spent $750 fixing several major leaks. I had such a severe oil leak that if I poured oil in the engine the oil would leak out after driving a mile. A week ago I spent $750 fixing the leak. By December 2011 altogether I probably will end up spending $2000 in repairs for the year 2011.

My car has 142,000 miles on it. A month ago CarMax offered me $2600 in trade in.

Unfortunatley I can't afford to make payments on a new car at the current time. All I can afford is $5000 for another car which will put me in another junker.

Should I keep pouring money into my 11 year old 1999 Toyota Camry or get rid of it?

I'm in the United States.
With my limited income financing a newer car is not an option. If I purchase another junker for $5000 I feel I"m throwing money away.

My choices at the current time are to keep this 1999 camry and pay for repairs or take the bus. In my area the buses don't run on Sundays or after 7pm.

It really annoyes me to no end when two of my friends think I should finance a new car when I can't afford it. My friends ask me why don't I buy a 2002 Nissan Altima for $5000 advertised on criagslist with 170,000 miles.

I dont have the skills or know how to work on or fix cars.
