I am 18 years old and I got caught shoplifitng at JCPenney a week ago in maryland with stuff worth less than $30...the security called the police who gave me a citation stating I have to appear in court and my maximum penalty is $500 or 18 months in jail (which he said is least likely going to happen). So I met with an attorney today he is going to charge me a flat fee of $500 and get the case dropped or do community service and get the case expunged. He said I won't have to pay a fine. Either way I wont have shoplifting on my record anymore. So is it worth it to hire the lawyer or am I better off alone? It was just a misdemeanor but I still want to know.
