...when performing on stage? I LOVE being on stage and hardly ever get nervous when I'm performing but cannot STAND public speaking. It's like my body gets ready to run. My legs wobble and my heart pounds. It doesn't seem weird to me but others say it is.

I'd much rather sing, dance and act in front of 1000 strangers than talk about a given topic in front of 27 class mates!! WHY??

I experience the EXACT same issues!!! It's not weird, and you're definitely not alone!

I don't know what it is, but I am more comfortable on a stage than almost anywhere else. But I always got the shakes when forced to do a presentation in Uni or whatever. For me I think part of it is I'm terrible thinking on my feet. When I'm acting in a play I've practiced extensively, and am able to memorize hundreds of lines. But in a public speaking presentation, I may have to face questions, and I really dread that.

It probably also has to do with the fact that in public speaking you're presenting your own thoughts and know that they will be judged. On a stage, you're usually presenting someone else's work. There's also an element of 'becoming someone else' when performing. When I act, I might even be nervous in the wings, but the moment I'm under the lights I'm not me anymore and it just melts away.

At least, these are my personal thoughts!

Of course not, Gertie! xx

The reason why you probably feel this is because with performing you feel you express yourself, your putting yourself into the role of someone else or you're doing what you love (singing and dancing). Its because its what you love. A friend of mine feels ill at the thought of performing but its probably because she cant stand singing, dancing or acting.

With performing in front of thousands of strangers it isnt as frightening as in front of a class of mates as their judgement and impression wont affect you as much, and you will most likely never see these people again.

xx hope i helped.

I can kind of see why you're this way, as public speaking is something you HAVE to do and the topic is already chosen. There's not much room for really expressing yourself this way.
