Is it typically cheaper to have a buffet then a waiter served dinner?

We originally told the venue we weren't interested in a buffett, so they didn't give us a price on it - but now I'm reconsidering the idea to cut costs. I left them a message already but I'm wondering if it's typically more affordable that way. Thanks!

It is usually more affordable to have a buffet. Don't be turned off by them, you can still have a great meal with a buffet. Some places will even offer carving stations where they carve the meat for each guest which makes for a little elegance. If you're still unsure of a buffet, ask your venue if they do family style meals. This is where the food is brought to each table and the guests serve themselves. It's usually cheaper than plated/served meals and a little more than a buffet.

buffet is much better and more appealing....at you wont hear complaints about service being slow.

and people will not have to wait for the food....and they will get to mingle too while on line.

Depending on what you serve, buffets are generally cheaper. Not only can guests go back for seconds (or sometimes thirds), but you don't have to pay for waiter service. I would definitely check back if you have enough time before the wedding about switching. We're doing a buffet for our reception in October, and we have so many more options than if we were to do a sit-down dinner.
