Is it typically cheaper to have a buffet then a waiter served dinner?

We originally told the venue we weren't interested in a buffett, so they didn't give us a price on it - but now I'm reconsidering the idea to cut costs. I left them a message already but I'm wondering if it's typically more affordable that way. Thanks!

Buffets can be very elegant...we went to a company x-mas party in a very prestigious hotel a few years back......the dinning room as beautifully set with elegant linens and crystal, fine china and sterling silver table wear. There were various 'stations' for cocktails, appetizers, salads, breads, meats, veggies, sides, etc with servers as some of those stations (the meat for instance as the meats were hand carved right there as guests requested)
It was great as the selection was amazing and you could go up for seconds...

Don't count out the buffet, Hon. & yes, they are often more affordable.
