Is it true that real poets don't talk about themselves in their pieces?

Someone said this and I'm not sure I believe it. Is this a credible claim?

They said it comes across as whining when poets do and that they are bad poets, or "unpoets", who do it all the time. What do you say?
So when a poet speaks about themself in a piece, they give themselves a name or speak as though it's someone else?
synopsis: I wasn't trying to start anything. I'd like to improve so I'm checking with everyone.
