i read in Horse Ilustrated that pintos r merely horses w/multiple colors, while Paints are a recognized breed, yet i watched Ultimate Guide to The Horse on Science Channel, where they were declared one and the same. who's right?

Horse Illustrated is correct, I actually got that issue, lol!

No, but I wondered this at a time as well, ever since I've been riding a paint. A paint is a reconized breed, and a pinto is just a horse that has more then one color. You could count a brown and white appy as a pinto, I guess.

Hope this helps!

Horse Illustrated is right.

APHA is an association for paints, they are registered by bloodlines, not by coloring. PHA is an association for pintos, and they are registered by coloring not bloodlines. You can register a paint horse with APHA and PHA, but you cannot register a pinto horse with APHA.

Also, the only other breed a paint can be bred with and still be able to register with APHA, is a QH. But if the baby doesn't have color its considered a "breeding stock paint", which is frowned upon by most paint breeders.
