Is it true that if i own an auto pontiac g5gt that i can change it to a manual?

i was thinking about getting a new car stick shift proferably, but my friend was serious and said "if you want a manual so bad you know that you can just change it"
if this is so how is it done?
how long would it take if i gave it to a dealer?
how much would it be?
and would you recommend it?
